THE BRIDGE is expanding friendly transatlantic contacts

Farewell Price!

In late summer, two young Americans said goodbye with a friendly “farewell” at the German-American club DIE BRÜCKE Gießen-Wetzlar. On the one hand, VDAC exchange student Price Watson left the university town in Central Hesse for his home state of Alabama after an eventful year. In addition to his studies at the Justus Liebig University, he was able to gain professional experience in the organization of choir festival events. On the other hand, Joshua Pietz from Wisconsin was said goodbye, who worked as an intern at ESE Engineering and Software Development for three months in the field of artificial intelligence.

Both were the first participants in the newly initiated transatlantic bridge internship program. The project manager Helmut Ott also thanked the two companies involved with the cultural organization Interkultur and the company ESE Engineering and Software Development. In particular, Interkultur President Günter Titsch and ESE Business Manager Daniel Pal were thanked for their generous support. In the last few months, numerous talks have been held with other Central Hessian companies, the Hessian State Chancellery, Hesse Trade & Invest, the local chambers of commerce and partners in the USA. The good contacts are to be expanded to benefit friendly relations between people on both sides of the Atlantic.

CASTING / MEDIUM HESSE (rge/ger/rg), Als bestes Jahr ihres bisherigen Lebens, bezeichnete die US-Studentin Allison Haskins ihr Jahr in Gießen. Dieser Tage verabschiedeten sich die Mitglieder des Deutsch-Amerikanischen Klubs „DIE BRÜCKE“ Gießen-Wetzlar von der Studentin von der University of Alabama. Sie war durch ein Stipendium des Studentenaustauschprogramms des Verbandes Deutsch-Amerikanischer Clubs (VDAC), mit dem der mittelhessische Klub verbunden ist, für zwei Semester zum Studium an die Justus-Liebig-Universität gekommen. Betreut wurde sie dabei maßgeblich von der Brücke-Studentenbeauftragten Kerstin Ruppel, die ihr Land und Leute in und um Gießen mit den Klub-Mitgliedern näher brachte.

 

„Ich habe so viel erlebt.“ sagte Haskins beim Abschied und hob dabei neben der erlebten Gastfreundschaft in und um Gießen, die Feiern zum „Tag der Deutschen Einheit“, den Kölner Karneval und Silvester in der Hauptstadt Berlin als weitere besondere Erlebnisse in Deutschland hervor. Während des Studiums hatte sie Gelegenheit Kurse zu dem Themen interkultureller Kommunikation und internationale Migration sowie zur Literatur und deutschen Popkultur zu besuchen. Besonders das Zusammenkommen mit deutschen und internationalen Studenten in Gießen war für sie eine besondere Erfahrung. Gerade die Offenheit bei Diskussionen und Gesprächen beeindruckte sie. Von Weihnachtskultur bis hin zu aktuellen politischen Themen wurde dabei gesprochen. „Durch meine Erlebnisse in Deutschland und Europa habe ich viel über mich selbst, andere Menschen und die Welt gelernt.“ sagt sie heute. Dank der Unterstützung durch die Brücke, habe sie eine andere Kultur erleben können und heute neue Perspektiven im Blick auf die Welt. „Ich werde die Zeit in Gießen niemals vergessen.“ sagte sie vor ihrem Rückflug in die USA.

 

Inzwischen ist schon der neue Brücke-Austauschstudent in Gießen angekommen. Patrick Elsworth lebt in Washinton DC und kommt vom Oberlin College in Ohio an die Justus-Liebig-Universität. Dort besuchte er nach der Ankunft bereits den ersten Lehrgang zur Einführung. Zurück aus den USA ist inzwischen die deutsche Austauschstudentin Carina Thomys. Sie war für ein Jahr an der University of Deleware und wird beim Brücke-Stammtisch am Mittwoch, the 7. Oktober um 19.30 Uhr im Hotel Köhler von ihren Erlebnissen berichten.

CASTING / WETZLAR / MEDIUM HESSE (rge/ger/rg), July 2014, Last October 2013 came the US-American Shannon Wilson through a VDAC-scholarship of the German-American Club "The Bridge" Gießen-Wetzlar as an exchange student at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen.
